Hi,

We have one user running Office 2007, when the user attempts to open a powerpoint presentation (.ppt) for which they are not the owner the following error is displayed:

'Powerpoint was unable to open or save this document.  Please ensure that you have access privileges to read or write the document and that it is not encrypted'

The user is within a group with RW permission and is able to open the file on another machine running Office 2003.  I have installed Office 2007 on another machine and the same issue is present with my login.  Once the file is copy and pasted (taken ownership) in the same folder the behaviour is as expected with the correct RW permissions.

My setup is as follows:

Openfiler 2.3
Kernal Version 2.6.26.8-1.0.11.smp.pae.gcc3.4.x86.i686 (SNP)
Authentication against Active Directory
SMB/CIFS
Time syncs against local SBS 2003 server

There is a similar post here:

This may have already been fixed with an update, please advise?

Update:

I have updated the Openfiler box and restarted, the kernal version is now displayed as 2.6.29.6-0.24.smp.gcc3.4.x86.i686 (SMP)
The issue described earlier remains, please advise if this is a bug or a configuration error at my end?

In "SMB/CIFS Options"
option "DOS filetimes"

From: "man smb.conf"

dos filetimes (S)
Under DOS and Windows, if a user can write to a file they can change the timestamp on
it. Under POSIX semantics, only the owner of the file or root may change the timestamp. By
default, Samba emulates the DOS semantics and allows to change the timestamp on a file if the user smbd is
acting on behalf has write permissions. Due to changes in Microsoft Office 2000 and beyond, the
default for this parameter has been changed from "no" to "yes" in Samba 3.0.14 and above. Microsoft Excel will
display dialog box warnings about the file being changed by another user if this parameter is not set to
"yes" and files are being shared between users.

Default: dos filetimes = yes
