<title>OF is rewriting my msdos PT to gpt and killing grub in Openfiler Project : Bug Reports &#38; Feature Requests</title>

<description>Topic: OF is rewriting my msdos PT to gpt and killing grub

Message: Sorry to resurrect yet another old thread but...This is still happening. There can be valid data on disks without a partition table - for instance, using (what Linux sees as) physical disks directly as physical volumes in an LVM set. When /opt/openfiler/sbin/list-disks.pl sees an invalid partition table, it goes ahead and:
Code:system(&#34;parted -s $d mklabel gpt 1&#62;/dev/null 2&#62;/dev/null&#34;);
Yeah. Not a good thing.I appreciate the OF team knows about this - there's a #TODO above the quoted line - but basically this is a data loss bug. Never ever ever touch the partition table without asking!If the logical volumes were set up manually (and there's good reasons to do this), and used raw disks (also good reasons), you can have valid data and volumes defined on the drives and as lbt said - it will work until you visit that drive. Suddenly your PVs will be invalid and you'll have lost all your data.Can I suggest that this line be commented out until a suitable UI is created to deal with this case? It's downright dangerous.-The1stImmortal

<description>Topic: Feature Request: Method of customizing smb.conf

Message: I would like a way to add some specialized Samba configuration directives without having to hack OpenFiler web scripts.Currently, to add a configuration directive and protect it from OpenFiler, I have to edit /opt/openfiler/var/www/includes/generate.inc and add new lines like these:&#160; &#160; &#160; &#160; $ac_smb_fp-&#62;AddLine(&#34;hide unreadable = yes&#34;);&#160; &#160; &#160; &#160; $ac_smb_fp-&#62;AddLine(&#34;hide dot files = yes&#34;);&#160; &#160; &#160; &#160; $ac_smb_fp-&#62;AddLine(&#34;unix extensions = no&#34;);I understand that Samba has far more configuration options than OpenFiler could reasonably be expected to surface to the interface, but having some way to set these configuration directives in a permanent way (meaning a way that would survive an conary updateall) would be a major advantage.Or am I just missing something?&#160; The generate.inc code certainly appears to completely overwrite smb.conf, so I don't see another way to customize samba behaviour.Josh

<description>Topic: Feature Request: Disk/Partition Encryption

Message: I've seen a couple requests for this in different areas of the forums, but there's been no formal feature request.I would like the ability to encrypt disks or partitions.&#160; Specifically, I would like the ability to encrypt removable (eSATA) backup disks.&#160; This would not require a significant change to the OpenFiler interface (not for my usage anyway). I just want to see the tools available (dm-crypt and cryptsetup with the LUKS extensions) in the Conary repository.&#160; This would allow me to write my own encryption and backup scripts and have them run locally on the OpenFiler box.&#160; This would save me network bandwidth, time (Gigabit Ethernet can't compete with eSATA), and an extra server.&#160; Is it currently possible to install cryptsetup?&#160; conary rq cryptsetup currently returns version 0.1-1-1, which is frankly antique (current cryptsetup version is 1.5) and there is no reference at all to any of cryptsetup's dependencies.&#160; If OpenFiler does not want to add or refresh their repository to include these tools, is there a compatible repository from which I could merge cryptsetup and dm-crypt?Thanks,Josh

Message: Ah, well, this is tempting, but OF is not really a general purpose server, its more of an appliance!So it makes sense. It is useful as is, just know what are it's primary purpose and features.Hardware drivers from vendors are nice, but they are most likely a kernel module, so this should not really be a problem?Installing the tools is a different thing all together, but there are quite a few people on this forum willing to help. (even if it is something that is not officially supported...)

<description>Topic: Could Openfiler use a well-supported distro? I need drivers &#38; tools!

Message: I'm trying valiantly to use Openfiler but it's very difficult because the rPath distro is too obscure for any hardware vendors to support.&#160; For example, I'd like to install Emulex and EMC drivers and tools (lpfc, HBAnyware, Powerpath, etc.) but they choke when confronted with rPath.&#160; Openfiler would be much more useful if it ran on a well-supported distro like SUSE or RHEL or CENTOS.Another advantage of moving to a well-supported distro would be to simplify updates.&#160; Currently you ship an old build of rPath/Openfiler and expect users to update it across the Internet, which is hard to do through a corporate firewall/proxy.&#160; If you used a well-supported distro users could apply updates from a local yum server.

<title>Infiniband in Openfiler Project : Bug Reports &#38; Feature Requests</title>

<description>Topic: Infiniband

Message: I agree totally. Openfiler is awesome, but has us looking at alternatives due to lack of Infiniband support.We bought 3 dual port topspin adapters off ebay for $55 dollars and although ideally you could do with a switch$700 for a flextronics from ibswitches.com you can actually just connect the cards together.We have two ESX servers with a card in each and the SAN (Windows Storage Server urgh!) has each port of the two directly linked tothe ESX servers.There is a guy selling 4m cables on ebay listed as Gore cables from $10. (they are normally $100)There is a lot to understand about infiniband due to the fact it can be a Remote SCSI interface (RDMA) or a network card (IPoIB)but mellanox.com and openfabric.org have a lot of information.The OFED drivers that work on ESX are not much different to the package that runs on Redhat,so it shouldn't take a distro guru too much jiggery pokery to build OFED into a distro.Mellanox and openfabric support guys would probably help out as both have a vested interestin expanding infiniband support.If you want to email me any components you want to by and I'll check them out and advise.I'm not a linux developer but we know our hardware, drivers &#38; OS's well.I believe that Infiniband is going to be huge now Vmware support is plenty and this could seriously pitch openfiler against the big boys.----------------------------------------------Steve Davieswww.WeSolveIT.co.uk
